POD Network Strategic Plan

Goal 1: To enhance POD’s infrastructure and services to members

Objective 1: Continuously clarify the scope of POD’s work
Strategy 1: Review mission: revise and update as needed
Strategy 2: Review appropriateness of POD name
Strategy 3: Survey membership re: scope of work, member needs and aspirations for organization, range of services, quality of services


Objective 2: Align POD’s staffing with current and future needs
Strategy 1: Initiate study of POD’s growth patterns and finance needs and project the nature  of the infrastructure need to respond to such growth in a way that enhances the quality of service offered to members
Strategy 2: Initiate review of leadership roles including the Executive Director, President, Past-President, President-
Elect, Committee Chairs, POD Core
Strategy 3: Consider modernizing conference, registration processes and hiring work-study or temporary staff to assist
with mailings in the POD home office
Strategy 4: Review conference team and volunteer structure and workload distribution


Objective 3: Align committee structures and functions (including Executive Committee and Core Committee) to accurately reflect POD’s instructional, individual, and organizational development foci
Strategy 1: Review scope and function of committees
Strategy 2: Review policies and procedures for committee nomination process and committee membership and chair
selection
Strategy 3: Clarify procedures for virtual committee meetings


Objective 4: Develop a 5-year plan for revenue generation and distribution to support expanded member services

Goal 2: To support continuous professional development opportunities for POD practitioners

Objective 1: Define the knowledge and skills base necessary for practice in the profession and consider how these may change as organization and field changes.
Strategy 1: Develop a scholarship of faculty development (SoFD)
Strategy 2: Develop a plan for continuous improvement and professional development for faculty developers
Strategy 3: Support and contribute to research that reviews the impact of professional development for faculty development practitioners.


Objective 2: Develop and support research and programs that investigate the multiples pathways and points of entry
into the profession.
Strategy 1: Identify policies and procedures for preparation and entry into faculty development.
Strategy 2: Develop a guide/handbook for potential employers of faculty developers.
Strategy 3: Examine the career development stages of faculty developers, illuminating the embedded values.
Strategy 4: Survey experienced faculty developers to determine their pathways to the profession
Strategy 5: Identify examples of the successful mentoring of faculty developers

Objective 3: Develop and support policies and procedures for Graduate student preparation and entry into the profession
Strategy 1: Support the development of graduate certificate and degree programs in faculty and organizational development.
Strategy 2: Develop and provide post-doc and opportunities to shadow experienced faculty developers


Objective 4: Develop a process capable of assessing and documenting the scope and quality of professional practice.
Strategy 1: Support development of a faculty developer’s portfolio.
Strategy 2: Develop systems/rubrics for the assessment of professional practice.
Strategy 3: Develop a Faculty Developer’s Professional Development Assessment Committee
Strategy 4: Work with other faculty/academic/educational Development organizations to develop common terminology
and professional practice definitions


Objective 5: Contribute to and support the dissemination of published literature on faculty development and teaching and learning
Strategy 1: Encourage POD members to publish in journals such as the International Journal of Academic Development and Journal of Graduate Student Development through written and electronic endorsements.
Strategy 2: Investigate multiple publications of TIA.
Strategy 3: Investigate electronic publication opportunities (i.e., create new free-to-public online quarterly, tri-quarterly, or biannual publication to increase POD’s exposure and impact.)
Strategy 4: Develop additional ways to promote Thriving In Academe.
Strategy 5: Establish regular POD column in the Chronicle of Higher Education and other major publications.
Strategy 6: Investigate providing access to The Teaching Professor to members through communication with Magna Publications.
Strategy 7: Support the development of research skillsnecessary to conduct high quality research on teaching and learning (SoTL)
Strategy 8: Encourage dissemination of SoTL activities at POD conference and at other conferences such as ISoTL
Strategy 9: Actively foster research collaboration activity through highlighted and featured conference sessions


Objective 6: Determine the needs of POD members regarding continuous professional development
Strategy 1: Conduct a Zoomerang survey of POD members.
Strategy 2: Present this information at the POD annual conference.

Goal 3: Promote increased attention to organizational development

Objective 1: Enhance awareness, knowledge, and skills on organizational development throughout POD’s activities
Strategy 1: Have a strand of conference sessions on topics relating to organizational development at each conference
Strategy 2: Expand participation of campus Administrators (presidents, provosts, etc.) at annual conferences through targeted and invited marketing
Strategy3: Develop an regular POD Institute focusing on organizational development including such topics as working with Senior Administrators, advocating for teaching and learning centers, serving as a change agent
Strategy 4: Collect, disseminate and maintain OD research/knowledge through websites, special interest groups,
newcomer sessions, IINFD on disciplinary-based OD
Strategy 5: Conduct structured interviews with developers experienced in OD to publish in newsletter and archive on
website as part of POD oral history project


Objective 2: Support and disseminate research on OD that supports teaching and learning
Strategy 1: Engage in procedures to forecast issues so POD can identify areas for future research
Strategy 2: Continue to collect handouts from OD conference sessions to post on POD’s website
Strategy 3: Budget for OD research grants
Strategy 4: Investigate additional OD research dissemination vehicles (i.e., a dedicated section of TIA)

Goal 4: Enhance Outreach and Advocacy

Objective 1: Enhance existing relationships and develop new relationships with the regional accrediting associations
in US and Canada
Strategy 1: Offer workshops and programs about faculty development and POD at regional accreditation association conferences
Strategy 2: Offer sessions at POD conference about regional accreditation associations
Strategy 3: Develop and maintain recording system and data base of all CORE member outreach activities


Objective 2: Expand relationships with other professional higher education organizations (e.g., AAC&U, Carnegie,
ASHE, ISoTL, etc.)
Strategy 1: Develop complimentary or reduced rate conference registration fees
Strategy 2: Offer workshops and programs about faculty development and POD


Objective 3: Expand membership by engaging in outreach efforts to institutions without membership in POD
Strategy 1: Continue fiscal support for Ambassadors Program
Strategy 2: Provide small grant support for emerging international faculty development networks to attend POD Conference


Objective 4: Enhance relationships with ICED and other national and international faculty development networks
Strategy 1: Co-host the 2008 ICED conference and 2008 POD/NSPOD Conference
Strategy 2: Continue attendance at ICED Council
Strategy 3: Seek new ties with organizations such as American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC),
HBCU POD, NSPOD


Objective 5: Advocate for teaching, learning, faculty and organizational development
Strategy 1: Develop procedures for identifying issues in higher education for which POD wishes to advocate and
appropriate advocating vehicles and methods
Strategy 2: Write position papers for publication in local, national and international media
Strategy 3: Establish relationships with local, national, and international governmental and non-governmental agencies
(i.e., UNESCO)

Goal 5: Support Diversity within POD and Throughout Higher Education

Objective 1: Enhance the creation of policies, procedures and structures within POD that value, support, and reinforce
a diverse organization
Strategy 1: Develop methods and policies to expand membership to include more diverse membership and
minority serving institutions
