2012-2015 Core Committee Self-Nomination Statements
Name: Hugh Crumley
Title: Director, Certificate in College Teaching & Adjunct Assistant Professor, Education
Institution: Duke University
Background in Professional and Organizational Development:
I have over fourteen years of professional experience in higher education and have been active in POD since 2006. Currently, my primary focus is on graduate student/future faculty development and the fit of instructional technology in this area.
My background is in foreign language teacher training. I worked in Bulgaria, Russia, Korea and the US before returning to graduate school to pursue a PhD in instructional technology at the University of Virginia. There, my roles included teaching classes for international teaching assistants, training ESL teachers and consulting with faculty on technology use in several departments. My dissertation research was on instructional technology use in international teaching assistant programs in the United States.
In 2006, I joined Duke University as a consultant on teaching and technology for graduate students and faculty. Recently, I was appointed Director of the Certificate in College Teaching Program in Duke's Graduate School, and in this role, teach a range of classes in college teaching for PhD students planning on a faculty career, collaborate with other Graduate School staff on the Preparing Future Faculty program, work with departments on TA training and teach educational technology courses for the secondary teacher preparation program.
What would I like to see POD accomplish over the next three years:
There are two primary areas in which I have experience and interest that would like to contribute on core as POD looks forward.
First, I would like to see POD's membership continue to diversify and as we reach out to faculty/TA developers from beyond North America, and to graduate students and postdocs interested in careers in faculty development. As a current member of the Graduate and Professional Student Development Committee in POD, I worked closely with Mary Wright (GPSD chair) on the selection of ten graduate students and postdocs to support in attending the recent conference in Atlanta. On core, I would consider myself an advocate for these groups, who comprise the future of our field.
Second, I would like to facilitate more opportunities for professional development in instructional technology. This is a critical area as our field continues to evolve and new media and tool use become increasingly important and central in higher education.
Thank you for your consideration!
